Fulvio Orsenigo | The Zone 1993-2005
Called simply the Zone, the industrial area of Porto Marghera is one of Italy’s largest and spreads out over 2,000 hectares on the west border of the Venetian lagoon. Well visible while landing in Venice airport, almost hidden on ground, it consists of a number of industrial sites, docks, warehouse and shipyards, connected to an industrial port through a water channels network. In the late 80’s of the last century the decline of the industrial production focused the attention over decommissioning, demolition and decontamination of great abandoned areas, highly polluted by industrial slugs and soil contamination. These photographs are part of the larger project “The Zone”, which documents the Porto Marghera area from 1993 to 2005.
